Milham Park Streambank Restoration

Posted Date: 3/2/2009

The eroding streambanks and exposed soils at the City of Kalamazoo's Milham Park were an ongoing source of sediment and nutrient loading to Portage Creek. Based on previous K&A sampling efforts related to the Portage-Arcadia 319 Grant Project, this stretch of Portage Creek was contributing 12% of the stormwater runoff, 20% of the sediment load and 13% of the phosphorus load to Portage Creek with respect to the entire Portage Creek subwatershed. To reduce these negative water quality impacts, K&A and The Forum of Greater Kalamazoo have recently completed a streambank restoration project at Milham Park using CMI funding. The project involved both streambank protection measures and riparian buffer restoration.
