Mona Lake Update

K&A continues to work with the Mona Lake Watershed Council in supervising alum applications to the lake and conducting sampling to analyze their impacts. The third of three early summer applications took place in May 2023 on roughly 150 acres of the lake. Alum applications bind available phosphorus in the water column as well as in lake sediments, greatly reducing nutrient availability that can drive algal blooms and nuisance aquatic plant growth. Preliminary results show post-application phosphorus concentrations 95-99% lower than what was present in years past, even months after the alum was applied. No problematic Harmful Algal Blooms have been observed since the first 2021 application.
